When Simon announced late last year that he would be doing A Century of Books again, reading and reviewing one book published in every year from 1925 to 2024, I was immediately tempted. I’d loved doing ACOB in 2012 the very first time Simon organized it, when our century was 1900 to 1999, but life is significantly busier now than it was then. I’d started and abandoned later ACOBs (in 2014 and 2018), unable to find enough time to juggle real life, reading, and, hardest of all, reviewing.
Is work easier now? No. Is writing reviews faster now? Also no. Did I decide to join anyways? Yes!
As usual, it was a lot of fun. I love how ACOB challenges me to search out books I might not otherwise have found and explore eras that are less familiar to me. There was a huge variety in my reading – covering everything from palliative care to children’s classics, from poetry to hard-boiled crime novels, from Harlequin romances to a memoir about joining the Israeli Defense Forces – and that is the very best part of ACOB.
