    FLINT, MI -- Hundreds bid farewell to former Flint Mayor Don Williamson Monday, recalling his rags-to-riches life story, quiet generosity, unconventional politics and stubborn love for his family, businesses and the city where he was born.

    Williamson, 85 -- a love-him-or-hate-him public figure -- got only love at his funeral Monday, April 8, where friends and relatives remembered him as relentless in his pursuit of success, compassionate to those in need and completely devoted to Patsy Lou, his wife of nearly 50 years.

    “He was able to succeed because he had the will to win and he wasn’t afraid to fail, and we all fail from time to time ... ," said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell, one of eight individuals who spoke during WIlliamson’s funeral at Swartz Funeral Home on Hill Road in Mundy Township. “He did it all and he did it all his own way and he did it with love and care about people.”
