    John Stevens Henslow a botanist, eldest of eleven children of John Prentis Henslow a solicitor. Sir John Henslow, chief surveyor for the Royal Navy, was his grandfather. John Stevens Henslow apparently had a taste for natural history from both his parents, educated at the free grammar school at Rochester and then on to St. John’s College, Cambridge.
