Professor Ali Ghufron Mukti, the President Director of the Indonesian Social Security Agency for Health (BPJS Kesehatan) spoke about his role setting up and running Indonesia’s universal health coverage, Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN) on Thursday 29 June. The scheme, introduced only a decade ago under Professor Mukti’s leadership, now covers more than 90% of the country’s population – more than million people. Research Fellow Dr Shobhana Nagraj hosted him and his family on a visit to Oxford.
In his lecture at Green Templeton, he explained the history of national health coverage in Indonesia, the new system and its challenges and advantages, and made some provocative comparisons to NHS waiting times, as well as to other national healthcare systems around the world. He also outlined the programme’s ambition to reach % coverage in the near future.
